Enjoy …

  • #310 “The Prayer” – Bloc Party: I think Bloc Party’s second album was rather under-appreciated.
  • #309 “Handle with Care” – Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins: A few songs appear twice on this list – as originals and covers. This cover converts the Traveling Wilburys into indie rockers and its perfect.
  • #308 “The Brazilianaire” – Cujo: Cujo is really Amon Tobin. He released Adventures in Foam before any albums under Amon Tobin, but you can tell who it is. Deserves to be on the list for the name alone. Another gem not on Amazon Music, so find it here.
  • #307 “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” – AC/DC: Like Metallica, it took many years to get over the biases I had towards these bands based on who liked them in junior high.
  • #306 “Randy Described Eternity” – Built to Spill: A lovely math song.
  • #305 “Leave the Biker” – Fountains of Wayne: The (sadly) late Adam Schlesinger wrote a gem pop gem here, right down to the seafood special.
  • #304 “King of the Road” – Roger Miller: Such a snapshot of an entirely alien time.
  • #303 “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” – U2: Is this the peak of the band’s earnestness? Maybe.
  • #302 “Milwaukee” – The Both: Ted Leo and Aimee Mann sing about the Fonz.
  • #301 “3 Freaks” – DJ Shadow: This is really the best of DJ Shadow version 2.0. Also, remember hyphy?

Here it is:

  • #320 “Chorus” – Erasure: Nothing says “please don’t beat me up” like being a junior high student in northern Worcester County during the early 90’s and really into Erasure.
  • #319 “Autoclave” – The Mountain Goats: I spent much of the early 2000’s making wrong assumptions about the music of the Mountain Goats.
  • #318 “Lover’s Town” – Billy Bragg: A deep cut from the original Peel Sessions and I make no apologies for that. Also, sadly not on the streaming services, so enjoy it here.
  • #317 “Fait Accompli” – Curve: Did I mention the junior high crush on Toni Halliday? And somehow, the streaming services do not have Doppelganger, so instead you see how hot Toni was here. Throw on some good headphones and listen to that bass line eviscerate your ears. It’s wonderful.
  • #316 “Stayin’ Alive – The Bee Gees: I know what you’re thinking: “how did he go from Curve to the Bee Gees? Why is this song even on this countdown at all? What is this madness?” I have no answers beyond the fact that I am a sucker for an awesome bass line.
  • #315 “River in the Road” – Queens of the Stone Age: This time, it isn’t the bass line but the drums. Oh, the drums.
  • #314 “I Will Always Love You” – Dolly Parton: Amongst packets of ten songs in the top 500, this stretch might have some of the biggest musical whiplash moments. And I’m not crying, you are.
  • #313 “99 Problems” – Jay-Z: See what I mean about the whiplash?
  • #312 “Hang Onto Your Ego” – Frank Black: If you haven’t watched the John Flansburgh-directed video for this Beach Boys cover, you haven’t lived.
  • #311 “Hypnotize” – Notorious B.I.G.: Speaking of videos, this is peak 90’s MTV.

Here we go:

  • #330: “I See a Darkness” – Bonnie Prince Billy: So, this has two versions because Will Oldham decided to rerecord the classic ballad into a a much more upbeat number. I don’t know which I like better.
  • #329: “Never Enough” – The Cure: So, this song is one of those entry points to alternative music for me. I remember seeing the video on a Saturday morning show on NBC(?) that played music videos (we didn’t have cable). I was transfixed by this Robert Smith fellow and the song was so much more captivating that anything else.
  • #328: “Our Days in Kansas” – Tullycraft: One sign of a great pop song is change during 3 minutes. It takes you to different musical places. You’ll experience this here.
  • #327: “Last Nite” – The Strokes: For many people, it is hard to remember what a breath of fresh air when “Is This It?” came out in 2001.
  • #326: “Forkboy” – Lard: Boy, Lard is a fascinating band. They were fronted by Jello Biafra and supported by multiple members of Ministry (including Al Jorgensen). “Forkboy” weaves a strange tale of drugs and conspiracy, all narrated by Jello.
  • #325: “Country Feedback” – R.E.M.: I am a fan of bleak R.E.M.
  • #324: “Supernova” – Liz Phair: Likely her biggest pop hit and also her catchiest song. Power pop perfection.
  • #323: “Don’t Believe the Hype” – Public Enemy: The way that Public Enemy changed music is undersold.
  • #322: “Dyslexic Heart” – Paul Westerberg: It is still a little odd that Paul Westerberg, a Minneapolis native, was featured so prominently in a movie solely about Seattle.
  • #321: “Let Me In” – R.E.M.: Likely the best bleak R.E.M. song, absolutely stunning.

As always, check out the playlists!

Check out #500-341 as well!

#340-331

  • 340: “Build Me Up”: Rhymefest with ODB: The semi-cover of “Build Me Up, Buttercup” featuring Ol’ Dirty Bastard singing the chorus that you didn’t know you needed.
  • 339: “Killing in the Name”: Rage Against the Machine: Where have you gone, Zach De La Rocha, the world turns its lonely eyes to you.
  • 338: “International Tweexcore Underground”: Los Campesinos: Funny that this song might have nearly as much cursing as #339.
  • 337: “San Quentin”: Johnny Cash: Maybe the best indictment of the prison-focussed legal system in which the US exists.
  • 336: “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)”: R.E.M.: I liked this song a lot more before 2016.
  • 335: “Girls & Boys”: Blur: This band was always such an enigma. Sometimes they just felt like a big inside joke we never understood.
  • 334: “Los Angeles”: Frank Black: We had a fleeting moment when we could all think that Black Francis’ post-Pixies career might have been great.
  • 333: “American Music”: Violent Femmes: High school, sophomore year.
  • 332: “La Bamba”: Richie Valens: No soy marinero, soy capitán.
  • 331: “Let Your Love Flow”: Bellamy Brothers: Smooth 70s rock. So smooth.
